Langstons Hughes' Childhood
From 1903 to 1915 Langston lived in Lawrence with his grandmother, Mary Langston. His grandfather Charles Langston lived in lived in kansas in 1862. His grandparents met and married in Ohio. They returned to kansas and bought a farm near Lakeview. During that time Charles was teacher, a farmer editor of historic times, a black Lawrence newspaper ,and a partner in a grocery store. Before Charles death in 1892 the family moved to Alabama in Lawrence. Langston’s mother, Carolina was born at Lakeview farming 1873 . She then attended the university of kansas for a year . 4 years later she married James Hughes in Oklahoma. After their son’s birth James left to get away from the racial prejudice that stopped him from practicing law. She then lived in Mexico. The rest of the family And Carries returned to Lawrence to live with Mary. Carrie didn’t stay long. She moved from place looking for a better job.
Langston started first grade in Topeka and lived with his mother. Later he went back to Lawrence and started school in a Pinckney school for second grade and third with segregated classrooms. He went to NY for 4th 5th and 6th grade. He got lonely with his grandmother. To get money she rented out rooms. They were still very poor though and had trouble paying their mortgage so Langston did jobs to help out like selling newspapers selling seeds and working at a hotel. He went to 7th grade at central school. Mary died that spring. The rest of the family went to go live with James and Mary Reed. Langston liked it there. When he was 13 he joined carries in Lincoln, Illinois
